For a very long time, the main floor underlayment material was wood. Unfortunately, the wood underlayments bend and swell in time especially when exposed to extreme conditions such as moisture, heat or frost. Some underlayments gradually return to their deigned shape. However the floors residing on top can't recover that easily and this way the floor underlayment ends up destroying the actual finished floor. Most of the flooring issues occur in home which are built over crawls. That is when the underlayment bends and warps due to the soil beneath. How does the soil affect the floor? The water vapors which the soil emanates permeate and get absorbed in the floor underlayment causing disastrous effects.
