Contrary to general opinion, hardwood floors are relatively easy to clean if you are using the right hardwood floor cleaners.
With the right substances you can prevent the floor from enemies like dirt, sand, grit, water and hard cleaners that don not have neutral PH. If you want to whiten or soften the surface you can use wax stripper or ammonia. You can also use other solutions like special oils and waxes that protect the wood from inside.
Depending on the shape of your floor you may or you may not damp mop it. If the floor is in good shape, the water won't affect the floor itself, it will just clean the finish. When you damp mop the floor it is very important to use a neutral pH hardwood floor cleaner. Another interesting solution for cleaning your floor is vinegar and other vinegar based cleaners. However, vinegar doesn't remove grease or soil.
Sometimes, special cleaning will be needed, because accidents occur. Liquid wax or paste wax can be used to remove alcohol spots. Other cleaners like fine sandpaper can be used for cleaning water stains, ink stains and other dark spots. Steel wool can be used at removing cigarette burns, heel and caster marks. If you want to remove gum and wax deposits you don't need to use a special hardwood floor cleaner. All you have to do is put some ice on the stain so it becomes breakable. You can also use a regular cleaner that you find in a store to loosen the stain.
If you want to give your floor the look that it had when you first installed it, some prefer to wax it. Waxing the floor protects it in different way that other cleaners: all the stains produced after the waxing will not affect the floor or the finish. Waxing can be dangerous because it can cause adhesion problems when you re-coat the surface.
